Power Generation
The Indian electricity sector is dominated by state and central sectors ownership in thermal and hydropower generation facilities. The current generating capacity in India is dominated by thermal generating capacity.
The Total generating capacity at the end of the 10th Plan was 132329.1 MW. Thermal capacity accounts for 65% of India’s power while Hydropower comprises 26% of capacity, far below the optimal balance of 40% as recommended by the Ministry of Power. The state sector currently controls the majority of power generation on India. The State Electricity Boards controls 53% of generation capacity.
The 1991 policy reforms allows for the private sector participation which has boosted private sector prospects.

The 11th Plan Working Group has recommended a capacity addition in the range of 82,200 MW to 94,300 MW for the 12th Plan (2012-2017), assuming a 9% GDP growth rate. We believe that our power projects will play a significant role in the growth of the Indian power sector and our Nigrie Thermal project and the Karcham-Wangtoo project will help achieve the Government of India’s vision of “Power for All by 2012”.
